Navigating the Free Food Maze

Portland Metro Transfer Station - ready to be composted

When times get rough and you can't make ends meet, even to eat, you may have to do what so many Americans are doing to supplement their food budgets and that is locating free food.

I'm here to tell you DON'T FEEL BAD about this. Just THANK GOD that there are places for you to get food for your family. I've been there in the past and yes, it is a humbling experience and one that maybe you don't want to tell the world about. That is why it is hard to find the information.

If you or someone you know is in need of food, I hope that I can help in some small way to educate you in navigating around that free food maze. It's one of those things, no one talks about, no one knows about - but you know it's out there! And when you need it, you really need to know how to access this information.

Americans waste so much food it should be a crime. So the food is out there! and I'm not talking about dumpster diving your dinner either.

Depending on what your income is, you may qualify for food stamps. In California, it is called Cal-Fresh.  They have changed the qualifications and it is much broader now due to the economy and so many working Americans who can't make it without some help. Call your local Human Services through your county for information. Or Google it. I know, Cal Fresh allows you to apply online - then they make an appointment to interview you.

While you are waiting for that process, if you totally do not have any income - then you may have to seek General Assistance. It's for 3 days and I know that is not long enough, but it can plug you in. I have never been on General Assistance but I do know of some, who have. Fortunately, they were able to get out of that system and on with their life. Sometimes you just need that little help.

There are food banks and pantries all over.  Once again, Google food banks in your town. Many senior centers will also know of Food banks, regardless if you are a senior or not. Many of these are non-profits from churches, organizations, shelters, and thrift stores - whose mission is to give food away to needy families or individuals. Some only require your word - that you make under a certain amount. And your driver's license or picture ID. It will not work against you for GA or Food stamps. They are separate programs. Many shelters, hand out bag lunches or have dinners.  Some for a minimal donation but you would not be turned away if you could not pay.

There also is the USDA Food Commodity Food Banks that are distributed about once a month. You get the basics - cheese, milk, eggs, canned vegetables, etc.

If you need these services, USE THEM.  Don't allow others to bully you - making you believe you are "one of those."  In fact, my advice to you would be, it's none of no one's business.

Don't even tell your Mom or your best friend. It's between you and your own immediate household and family. PERIOD!
